No singing this week, kids. Sorry. However, I have three poems for you this time!
The first one today, "Song Of The Twisted Tree", is the one poem I had the most fun writing! My mother once told me that, if she ever owned a Bed & Breakfast, she would want to name it "The Twisted Tree" and have a sign by the door that read "Beware of the nuts!". Of course I had to write a song for it, and since my brain spends 95% of its time in a world of fantasy, I based it in the same, and it came out completely ridicules and fun! The tune I put it to is "O'Sullivans March", a traditional Irish song. The link will take you to a YouTube Video. In case you want to sing along, you should know that there is a "musical interlude" starting from 1:51 and lasting until 3:18 on the video where my song does not fit in. My little brothers and sisters just love to sing the song along with me, and they dance during the "interlude". They think it's a hoot!
Now, this short little poem is meant for summoning a dragon. If you speak it, the dragon nearest you will hear it and answer your call.
This summons must ONLY be used when you have no other choice. It isn't a "come to my tea-party" invitation. It is a "help me, help me, help me" sort of thing that the dragons take very seriously. I wrote it a long time ago when I was just a little kid, and it has changed a lot since then, and it still changes when I need it to. It's a very flexible poem. So, keep it in your pocket and use it wisely.
This song next song, "The Dragon's Breath", is a completely different pace from the other two. It is slow and sad.
I wrote it for the dragons in my books. The horrible things that I put my poor babies through sometimes require a soft, sad song to sooth them afterward. It actually goes to a song call "The Dragons Breath" composed by David Arkenstone. I took the liberty of putting together a video with my "lyrics" going to Arkenstone's music. Perhaps one day I will actually sing it for you, but, until then, you'll just have to keep your fingers crossed. Enjoy the video: I wrote these two folk songs for a friend, basing them on a river near a town in a world in his book(s). The first one, The Water Sprites' Song, has a tune to go with it, but it is still very rough and we are still working the bugs out of my sister's microphone *cough, cough*. So, no singing choir for you this time (which you should probably be knocking on wood and thanking God that is the case...). Anyway, these two poems are lighthearted and very folk-like. They are supposed to be simple, but fun. I hope you enjoy them as such. The Seven Songs of FreyaThe first Singing River Sprite
Called brightly to the second “Have you seen Freya a-dancing? See her there singing and prancing? Come and look, friend, I beckon.” The second took right notice And quickly spoke to the third “Have you heard Freya a-singing? I say a man has set her voice ringing. Hark! She trills as sweet as a bird.” The third, so please, danced And away it called to the fourth “Have you heard? Freya is a-yearning! A man they say has her heart so burning! Say I he is from the fair North.” The fourth sprite followed Then called on the sober fifth “See Freya, who has caught a-darling! He is a fair man, eyes like a starling, Hair bright as golden myth!” The fifth listened to the song Before visiting the sixth sprite “A fine day, for Freya is adoring A handsome man, rich and boring, She wears a dress of white!” The sixth sprite left excited It flowed down to the seventh “Our Freya is gone a-marrying! She sings of a tall man caring! A man renown in legend!” The seventh mirthfully laughed Then showed the other sprites “The man that she is a-singing Is an elfin warrior springing He is Odinn the bright!” All the water sprites watched As Odinn came to their shore And Freya ceased her dancing She looked so enchanting Odinn could not ignore. “Freya! Of your love I’ve drank. And ne’er again will I be satisfied. Freya my love, come forth! I’ll take you away to the North, Let us forever be as one.” “Dear Odinn, my dream! You have earned my loyal heart!” Sweet Freya took his hand And on her finger he placed a band And the twosome ran away. The sprites watched them They followed them up the river They chimed a lovely croon Their voices in harmonious tune And sang “Alámenë! Alámenë!” (*Elvish - "Farewell! Farewell!") "The Seven Songs of Freya" written by Kathryn Fogleman As most people know already, I am in the process of publishing a book series titled "Tales of the Wovlen". The main antagonist in my series is a queen, a witch, named Demitreah.
Demitreah is very old. My sister and I created her when we were just children, playing in the back yard, only 12 or so years ago. But in Demitreah's world, she is thousands of years old. She originally started out as a good, kind person in our back yard. She gave our heroes shelter, healing, and aided them in their quests. However, something happened that changed her for the worse. Few know what exactly happened, but Demitreah sings a song sometimes which hints to the events that led to her fall and the demise of her people. This song is a very sad, very dark, and rather smug, mirroring its composer (Demitreah, not me!). It will be featured in my second book, sang by none other than the witch herself! The second song recounts the woes of Demitreah's most trusted henchmen, the creatures she created herself through painstaking effort, years of toil, and no small amount of magic - The Void Lords. They are wraith, souls trapped in a void, and they are controlled solely by Demitreah. Their past stories are each long and filled with pain. Their song, which they cannot sing, expresses only a fraction of the sadness and pain that they have suffered while forced to live as immortal slaves. I hope you find both songs intriguing, if nothing else. |
Kathryn FoglemanAuthor of the fantasy series, Tales of the Wovlen, Kathryn spends a great deal of time in the world of her imagination, having tea with fire breathing dragons, writing books on flying space ships, and practicing her mad scientist laugh with gusto. However, on occasion, she returns to this world just to play with her dog and blog about her fun. My BookGrab a Button!![]() Archives
